Excerpt One
Ā
Something shot up AnnieāsĀ spine. Fire. Or the fear of acknowledging someone could see her there. Someone could distinguish her from all the other snowflakes and fingerprints. The fire and fear made a knot in her belly, and she began to perspire.Ā Ā
She glanced left, then right, playing with the necklace, noticing things in the room no one else did ā symmetry and angles and imperfection ā until she couldnāt help but notice him again.Ā Ā
His eyes engulfed her. Had they ever left her face?Ā Ā
Clearly, the man looked at her, or was it through her? Either way, he could see beyond her stupid trick mirror. He wasn’t staring. But he saw her. No boy had ever sized her up with an audaciousness she hadnāt thought existed, and this was no boy ā he was a man.Ā
Ā
Excerpt Two
Ā
The only place Cal wanted to be was with Annie ā now, in his bed ā but he knew she was having no part of that. She required more finesse. The way sheād escaped earlier when he was pressed against her body by the window ⦠the nervous catch in her breath ⦠her exquisite response to his touch on the porch and now as he held her hand ā her submission would be better than he anticipated.Ā
Ā
Excerpt ThreeĀ
Ā
They stood face-to-face on the sidewalk, people passing them on the left and right, carefully avoiding collision as streaks of headlights whizzed by in slow motion. The air was eerie with theĀ threat of rain. A tepid wind began to blow. The haunting atmosphere overtook Annie the same way Cal’s eyes did.Ā
“It’s going to rain,” she muttered, barely, because her dress and chest pressed against him.Ā Ā
Their eyes flamed. Her muscles went into hibernation.Ā Ā
Cal steadied Annie, trailing a hand up the side of her body from her waist to her face. He rubbed his fingers across her cheek, slid the same hand past her shoulders, then took hold of the hair at the nape of her neck.Ā Ā
A surge of electricity shot through her, head to toe. Lightning would surely strike at any moment.Ā
About the Author
A.R. Hadley writes imperfectly perfect sentences by the light of her iPhone.Ā
She loves her husband.Ā
Chocolate.Ā
Her children.Ā
And Cary Grant.Ā
She annoys those darling little children by quoting lines from Back to the Future, but despite her knowledge of eighties and nineties pop culture, she wasĀ actually meantĀ to live alongside the Lost Generation after the Great War and write a mediocre novel while drinking absinthe with Hemingway. Instead, find her sipping sweet tea with extra lemons on her porch as she weaves fictional tales of love and angst amid reality.Ā
