The Perfect Child, by Author Lucinda Berry: A Well Read Woman Book Review

“For eager adoptive parents, getting what they always wanted has chilling consequences.”

Synopsis:

A Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestseller.

A page-turning debut of suspense about a young couple desperate to have a child of their own―and the unsettling consequences of getting what they always wanted.

Christopher and Hannah are a happily married surgeon and nurse with picture-perfect lives. All that’s missing is a child. When Janie, an abandoned six-year-old, turns up at their hospital, Christopher forms an instant connection with her, and he convinces Hannah they should take her home as their own.

But Janie is no ordinary child, and her damaged psyche proves to be more than her new parents were expecting. Janie is fiercely devoted to Christopher, but she acts out in increasingly disturbing ways, directing all her rage at Hannah. Unable to bond with Janie, Hannah is drowning under the pressure, and Christopher refuses to see Janie’s true nature.

Hannah knows that Janie is manipulating Christopher and isolating him from her, despite Hannah’s attempts to bring them all together. But as Janie’s behavior threatens to tear Christopher and Hannah apart, the truth behind Janie’s past may be enough to push them all over the edge.

Rating: 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

The Perfect Child, a psychological thriller by Author and Trauma Psychologist, Dr. Lucinda Berry, is a novel about Ortho-Surgeon, Dr. Christopher Bauer, and his wife Hannah, an ER Nurse, who seemingly have it all, but are desperate for the one thing they want most: a baby.

Just as the Bauers are considering adoption after several failed IVF rounds, a young girl with substantial injuries and a dog collar on her neck is rushed by ambulance with a police escort into the emergency department, after the little girl was found wandering in a parking lot.

“… it’s a lost kid or something, and she’s in really bad shape. Ambulance is bringing her in with a police escort.”

The timing of the young girl, (Janie’s), arrival at the hospital where the Bauers worked, while they were nearly desperate for a baby, were the makings of a perfect storm (and the perfect psychological thriller!) While Hannah avoids Janie at first to protect her own heart, (injured kids are the most difficult cases, especially for a woman who’s only wish is to raise a child) Christopher and Janie instantly connect and share a special bond, made stronger after he performs Janie’s orthopedic surgery.

Christopher, believing it’s fate that Janie be placed with them, enthusiastically convinces Hannah that Janie, a traumatized six year old, could be their “baby”.

I felt like Christopher, while likeable, had a bit of a hero complex. His refusal to see the truth was not just because he believed that girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice, it was also because it threatened the facade that Janie was a regular young girl and he “fixed” her, in my opinion. He did a lot alongside Hannah to get Janie help, like therapy, but it was more “parenting class” (with a Dr. who diagnosed Janie with reactive-attachment-disorder and wouldn’t budge) than it was “psychotherapy session”. Both Hannah and Christopher made choices that frustrated me, in their attempts to control and alter Janie’s behavior: THE CAT, REALLY? I gritted my teeth and just waited for the worst.

Hannah was more of a realist when it came to Janie but unfortunately her husband, Christopher thought Janie could do no wrong.

Unaware of Janie’s disturbing past, they foster-to-adopt her and are assigned to DCF caseworker, Piper, who oversteps the boundaries far more than she knows she should. Janie never discusses her mother (who was found deceased in a trailer park) leaving me wondering what on earth happened to Janie and why doesn’t she mention anything from her past? The dog collar, fused and broken bones — all a mystery. The suspense and final reveal is an absolute shocker. I loved the ominous ending.

There are three alternating POVs: Christopher’s, Hannah’s, and Piper’s. I loved having the perspective of the DCF social worker too. I appreciate multiple POVs, especially with a complex story like The Perfect Child.

Hannah was my favorite character, partly because she saw through Janie’s manipulative tactics, and there were quite a few. I felt terrible for Hannah as I saw her slowly losing herself, her dream became a nightmare. A surprise pregnancy further overwhelms her and Janie’s regression, aggression, and violence reach new levels, while Christopher is off in fairytale land, his head in the clouds. Hannah, the primary caregiver, is at her wit’s end.

The Perfect Child is a page-turner. I absolutely loved this dark read. I’ve watched documentaries on feral children and severely abused and neglected children and find the psychology and stories like this that are built from real cases morbidly fascinating as well as horrific and shocking. Janie reminded me of a young German girl who was labeled as a sociopath at an extremely young age. She was downright frightening, much like little Janie, and said terrifying things in the sweetest voice while she batted her big beautiful blue eyes.

“She’s just a girl. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”

From the bestselling author of The Perfect Child comes a short thriller about a couple faced with the terrifying return of a girl they once called their own who threatens everything they hold dear.

Janie is the last person Hannah and Christopher Bauer want to see again. But Janie’s moved back to Clarksville. She’s no longer the frail child Hannah and Christopher adopted over eleven years ago. The child who destroyed their lives.

Now Janie is out of juvenile detention—a beautiful, confident young adult—and publicly promoting her new tell-all memoir. At just eighteen, Janie has a violent and tragic story to share, brimming with grisly details. Details the public can’t get enough of…and that the Bauers can’t bear to relive. Janie has taken a new name and claims to have reformed her sociopathic ways. She’s ready to make amends. But when the Bauers refuse to meet with her, she takes matters into her own hands.

After the social worker formerly assigned to the case makes disturbing revelations about Janie’s calculated behavior, the Bauers brace for Janie’s next move, determined to protect their family—at any cost.

✨ ⚠ ⚡🔫 Trigger Warning: Childhood Abuse and Neglect ✨ ⚠ ⚡🔫

She’d been the worst case of child abuse and neglect I’d ever seen. Still to this day. That part was fact, and she described it vividly— tied with zip ties in a dark closet, a dog collar around her neck to shock her into submission or sometimes just to toy with her for fun, barely fed, never let into the outside world. Kept in filth and rot. And on and on it went. Her Adverse Childhood Experience score was off the charts. It was why Christopher had fallen head over heels in love with her when the police and paramedics brought her into the hospital where he worked. Why Hannah had given up her dreams of having a baby.”

A Welcome Reunion

A Welcome Reunion, by Clinical Psychologist and Author Lucinda Berry, is a coming of rage tale about an eighteen year old woman exiting “the system”, changing her name from Janie to Hope, and telling her story to the world, writing a memoir about her tragic experiences as a child and then with the Bauers–who she says gave up on her after welcoming her into their home as a family member. Rejected again, she became institutionalized, and eleven years later, Janie “Hope” is back in her old hometown, where her former adoptive parents live.

Hannah, Janie’s adoptive mother and a seasoned and decorated social worker, disagrees with most of her former daughter’s narrative. She and her husband, Christopher were good to Janie, she felt, but no amount of mothering would save her. It was true that Janie had been abused and neglected by her cruel biological family, but that no longer garnered any sympathy from Hannah; especially not after the absolute Hell Janie put her family through.

Whatever was wrong with her, you could no longer fix it, and I didn’t feel sorry for her, even if everyone else did.”

A Welcome Reunion

…when they first discovered her in a Walmart parking lot all those years ago wearing only a diaper and a dog collar. She’d been filthy, covered in scars and blood. Her body told a painful tale of years ravaged by abuse and neglect….”

A Welcome Reunion

I liked the trauma-bond dynamic between Christopher and Hannah. Their marriage was held together tentatively by strings that would wind tighter than wild Ivy during a tragic circumstance.

We didn’t talk about the Janie days in the same way veterans didn’t talk about their war days.”

A Welcome Reunion

With Janie back in town, spinning a wild web of all the abuse she suffered before and during her time in a juvenile justice program, Hannah and Christopher’s character is dragged through the mud in her tell-all memoir and during a TV interview, stirring feelings of anger. When Hannah catches wind of the behind the scenes master manipulation of someone who means everything to her, Hannah rages, her blood boiling as dark thoughts churn within her brain.

In A Welcome Reunion we also get the pov from Piper, a social worker who failed to follow up and blames herself for everything that has gone wrong in Janie’s short life. She’s friendly with Hannah and Christopher and is following Janie’s every move, offering them private info that could cost her her job, or worse, someone’s life.

I really liked this suspenseful read, especially because of it’s inclusion of childhood sociopathic behavior — an extreme psychological rarity. I love reads that offer a differing perspective, one that you might not expect.

I had no idea that this short is part of a series, starting with The Perfect Child. You wouldn’t imagine my excitement about getting to read more about “the beginning” and the origins of how it all came to be. I look forward to reading The Perfect Child!

📸 Goodreads

Overall, A Welcome Reunion is a well-crafted horror short about a young, violent girl, who had been failed many times in life, and the absolute havoc of terror she brings with her everywhere she goes. Now grown up, she’s back and seemingly more sociopathic than ever. Hannah won’t be deceived again, nor will her family — no matter what it takes to ensure that. I liked the decision she made but would have liked to see the aftermath and known Hannah’s fate. Even so, this was such a good read and I’d recommend it to anyone not triggered by the themes of child abuse, and to those who find it fascinating to read about psychological issues and personality disorders. 5 stars, without a doubt.

After his marriage fails, he hopes a vacation in France will relax and restore him. But fate has something more poisonous in store in this biting tale from bestselling author B. A. Paris.

Michael wanted to back out of this trip to the South of France after his wife left him, but his sister and their friends wouldn’t hear of it. His fellow houseguest Rupert isn’t in the mood, either, having recently been widowed. But rather than bonding, Michael is unsettled by Rupert’s constant needling. That and the bug bites are enough to suck the life right out of an idyllic holiday.

The Mosquito is part of Obsession, a collection of compulsively readable short stories about people pushed to their extremes. So addictive you won’t be able to put them down—read or listen to each story in a single sitting.

Review:

Who wouldn’t want to spend two weeks in a beautiful converted farmhouse in the South of France, even if their wife had recently walked out on them?”

The Mosquito

The Mosquito, by Author B.A. Paris, is a great addition to the Obsession Collection, an agreeably addictive series of thriller/mystery shorts.

Michael, our protagonist who suffers from “the nice guy syndrome/paradox” is recently divorced and reluctant to take a Holiday (vacation) to France, only acquiescing when his sister convinces him to join them. Furthering his decision, another single-recent-widower-houseguest, Rupert, will be there, so it wouldn’t be only “couples”.

Unfortunately, Michael is unsettled by Rupert and his continuous criticisms, and a mosquito is absolutely terrorizing him, whining in his ear at night and repeatedly biting him. By day, Rupert watches Michael’s every move, helicoptering over him, and uttering barbed insults that sting worse than the mosquito.

The tension builds until the most epic of conclusions. The ending alone made this a five star read for me, and I’m interested in reading more works by this talented author! I recommend this read to fans of novellas and short stories, thriller, mystery and suspense fans, and anyone with a Prime membership. It’s free to borrow as of this posting!

AWRW Rating 5/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Ransom, like the previous books of the Nicole Graves Mysteries by Author Nancy Boyarksy, is an exciting mystery featuring one of my favorite women sleuths, Nicole Graves. This time, Nicole finds herself investigating a home-invasion turned murder and discovers that one of the victims may not be who they claim to be. Then, Nicole receives a large (and unwanted) inheritance. Days later, under remarkably similar circumstances to the case she is investigating, someone near and dear to Nicole is kidnapped and a ransom of her full inheritance is demanded. She works with the police, but the kidnappers are always one step ahead and not pleased with the inclusion of law enforcement. When the threats get more bold, she realizes if she’s going to be successful in her rescue efforts, she has to make a choice: continue cooperating with the police and risk angering the kidnappers more, or go about this all alone. This installment shows Nicole Graves putting her skills to the test… and it does not disappoint!

The Ransom is more suspenseful than the previous books in the series, or at least it felt that way. It was certainly more intense and had a lot of action, which was exciting. The mystery is really clever, and I was surprised with the “who” of the whodunnit! I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say there were plenty of moments that kept me guessing, like a good mystery should. It was fun to unravel all the details and explore the case vicariously through Nicole. I also really enjoyed all the scenes where the characters were in danger, such as various cat and mouse chases (between herself, the victims and the perpetrators). This was an action-packed installment.

The small hints of romance between Nicole and the detective were sweet. The conclusion wrapped things up nicely and made me smile. I enjoyed it very much.

The Ransom is strong on mystery and suspense. If you enjoy mystery novels featuring smart women sleuths, I highly recommend this series. One of my faves!

📖⚖👩Book Review of Liar Liar, (a Nicole Graves Mystery Novel), by Author @NancyBoyarsky & #Giveaway!👩⚖📖

TourBanner_LiarLiar

Liar Liar, by Author Nancy Boyarsky

In Liar Liar by Nancy Boyarsky, the loveable Nicole Graves finds herself in a predicament once again, when a co-worker calls out sick, and she’s entrusted to look after a witness in the high-profile, Oceanside University rape trial. Wanting to do her job and see justice served, she takes on the assignment despite her newly-engaged fiance’s well-founded concerns for her safety and privacy.

After spending time with the rape victim in close quarters, Nicole catches small things that lead her to believe the victim may not be telling the truth. Adding insult to injury, if the accused, a young man-of-color, is convicted, his promising future will be destroyed with the drop of the gavel. Is the victim speaking the truth?

Nicole Graves puts her life, and relationship, on the line to find the answers to the mystery, discovering some truths about herself in the process.

I love mystery reads and Liar Liar didn’t disappoint. I was fully engrossed in this story, often living vicariously through Nicole while I flipped the pages. She is smart and the most lovable protagonist for her sleuthing, but also for her desire to seek justice and the truth.

While the subject matter of a rape trial is heavy, the book itself is not. It’s devoid of graphic descriptions of non-consensual sex (thank goodness) and the story line is clean. I wouldn’t go as far as to classify it as a “fluffy” mystery novel, like a cozy mystery, but it has the same readability if you’re looking for a “woman sleuth” read. I found this book to be very enjoyable for it’s mystery, unpredictability, and lovable protagonist.

I consider myself a pretty good “whodunit” detector, but Author Nancy Boyarsky got me on this one. AND IT WAS SO CLEVER! The “red herrings” were there when I thought back on it, but it wasn’t at all obvious. To me, that’s the mark of a great mystery read. Bravo!

Easily a five star novel. Highly recommended to fans of women sleuth reads.

Nicole Graves finds herself in the crosshairs when she reluctantly agrees to babysit a witness in a high-profile rape trial.

Mary Ellen Barnes is suing her university’s star quarterback for rape when the authorities won’t act. In the court of public opinion, Mary Ellen appears to be the quintessential, pious, good girl. But her lies and mysterious comings and goings lead Nicole to suspect that she’s not what she seems.

It isn’t just Mary Ellen who’s acting suspiciously. No one wants to own up to the truth in Liar Liar, not even Nicole, whose fiancé begs her not to look into the case. But when the witness goes missing during the trial, Nicole is caught up in a tangle of lies that turns deadly. After the investigator assigned to the case fails to do his job, Nicole is determined to find the killer on her own, no matter the risks.

Excerpt

Nicole heard a sound and came in from the balcony in time to see Mary Ellen, now fully dressed, slip out the front door. Nicole ran after her. She couldn’t allow the girl to run off after what she’d said about the hopelessness of her predicament. By the time Nicole got to the elevator bank, it was empty. The girl was already on her way down.

Nicole couldn’t take the stairs; she was on the tenth floor. But the elevator bank had four cars, and luck was with her. Moments later, the door to another elevator opened. When she reached the lobby, she caught sight of Mary Ellen through the window. She had just left the building and was jaywalking across Ocean Avenue toward the beach.

Nicole rushed after her. The wind was picking up, blowing through her jacket. She was halfway across the street, when a car heading south skidded to a stop a few feet away. The driver leaned on his horn and opened his window to scream at her. She ignored him, trying to keep Mary Ellen in sight. The girl seemed to be headed toward the shoreline. When Nicole reached the sand, she started running. She was in good shape, but running on the beach was completely different from a morning jog around the neighborhood. Her shoes sank into the soft surface, making it impossible to gain momentum. Meanwhile, sand leaked into her shoes, chafing her sockless feet.

The beach near the waterline was dark, and Mary Ellen was no longer in sight. Nicole looked desperately around, trying to figure out which way the girl had gone. All at once she stumbled over something lying in her path. As she hit the sand, the figure she’d tripped over slowly sat up, like a zombie in a horror film.

Pocketful of Bones, by Author Julie Frayn

pocketfulofbones

Finnegan MacGillivray, red-haired, freckle-faced social pariah, finds solace in his mother’s garden, while she entertains “dates” in his home. When an accident takes the life of a friend, Finnegan buries the evidence amid the purple dead nettle and bougainvillea, and unearths a treasure trove of human remains. Did his house rest atop an ancient burial ground? Or was there a killer tucking him into bed at night?

His fascination with bones grows as fast as his obsession with his mother. She rejects his advances, and he escapes to the other side of the country. Years later, he returns to his childhood home, to the secrets and the guilt and the bones — and to fulfil his destiny.

Synopsis

While Tibba entertains “dates” in her home, her son Finny Mac finds comfort in his mother’s garden, much like his mother had when she would hide away from her abusive father as a child. The garden is an oasis of comfort, but under the flowering beds of annuals, perfectly manicured shrubs, perennials, and the purple dead nettle are carefully buried secrets, woven together by the roots of the plants above it.

When an accidental tragedy occurs and Finny buries the evidence in his mother’s beloved garden, he uncovers human skeletal remains. This discovery fuels a new obsession — a morbid fascination with bones and collecting them. It also triggers a newfound fascination for his mother, one that morphs from adoration to desire.

AWRW 5 Star Book Review

“She wasn’t a conventional mother. Not a cookie-baking, craft-making, costume-sewing, nurturing type of mother.”

When I saw the cover for Pocketful of Bones floating around social media, I was immediately intrigued by not only the eye-catching design, but the title too. Being familiar with Julie Frayn’s writing style — her almost fantasy-like world building, dark humor, and edge-of-your-seat psychological suspense — I knew I would enjoy her latest, and once again, I was not disappointed!

The opening pages threw me into sensory overload, in the best of ways. Through Frayn’s descriptive writing, I imagined the garden setting and the comfort young Finnegan felt surrounded by his mother’s loving-tended-for garden. Being a garden enthusiast myself, I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the perennials, annuals, shrubs, and trees. This visual will stay with me, among my favorite reading memories. It’s scenes like these that fuel my love for reading.

I loved Finnegan and enjoyed experiencing the story through his perspective. It isn’t often that I can “get into” the POV from a male, nevertheless a child, and yet I loved living through his character. Of course, Finnegan ages throughout the book, and he isn’t a child for long, but still!

Pocketful of Bones is also told from the perspective of Finnegan’s mother. Tibba is a prostitute who finds comfort in gardening, cigarettes, and alcohol. Just as her life turns around for the better, it all comes crashing down on her. While she is flawed and not exactly mother-of-the-year, she is still lovable and her ups and downs made her all the more interesting.

The story is dark, suspenseful, at times funny, and even heart-breaking. The ending made me gasp out loud. To sum up my thoughts in one word: WOW.

After Lainey’s husband blindsides her by filing for divorce after 27 years of marriage, Lainey decides she’s finally going to take that trip to Hawaii – the one she wanted to take on her honeymoon.

At almost fifty, she has to learn how to be comfortable on her own again. She sheds her skin with her marriage and gets a tattoo that represents herself and her new journey: a coral snake.

News of sexual crimes and murder reminds her to keep her wits about her and stay safe. This wasn’t the Hawaii she read about in brochures! Still, she’s determined to enjoy herself on this vacation.

But then, a creep bothers her at a resort bar and a charming man named Julian swoops in to her rescue. This vacation is starting to look up… or is it?

First, I’d like to say “mahalo” to the author for the complimentary copy of A Snake in Paradise. 🙂 I spent an enjoyable afternoon reading it!

This empowering novella pulled me in right away and had me at the edge of my seat throughout. It was also great that the themes of this novella are self-discovery, self-growth, and triumph from evil. A Snake in Paradise also has a satisfying conclusion.

I loved Lainey and all of her astute observations. She was super intelligent and the wrong “little lady” to mess with!

I loved the rich setting of this story and enjoyed reading about the turquoise waters and the different terrains of the island. What I love about reading is living vicariously through the characters so I really appreciated the setting! I felt like I was in Hawaii. 🙂

I would recommend this short read to fans of crime fiction and psychological suspense aimed at empowering women. A quick, yet satisfying read!

Have you ever read a book that stuck with you, long after you closed the book? Different things within the pages of a book stick with us… Sometimes it’s the setting, the plot, or the general message that makes a book unforgettable.

Have You Seen This Girl? left a mark on me because of the memorable characters, specifically the lead protagonist, Wendi Wise. I am so lucky to be a book blogger, because I have the opportunity to speak to Wendi, through her creator. 🙂 The following is my character interview of Wendi, answered by the Author in September of 2015.

Warning: Contains some spoilers

Hi Wendi. Thank you so much for agreeing to be interviewed on A Well Read Woman Blog. I think this will be a fun way for readers, and potential future readers to get to know you better!

Wendi, I know your story isn’t about addiction, but it certainly took a back seat. What was your drug of choice, and why?

wendiAd-dic-tion. Three tiny syllables that have affected my life so much…I used to think my drug of choice was heroin, but I quickly learned in my lovely stint to rehab that I’m what you call a “polysubstance abuser” – which basically means I’ll use whatever drug I can get my hands on. And the why…I used pot a couple times to look cool, but mostly I avoided drugs. But when I was held captive in the House of Horrors, my body was introduced to stronger substances, like heroin. I initially hated the drugs, but then I came to rely on them. My body needed the heroin to function. It wasn’t about feeling “high”; it was about not feeling terrible. After the addiction to heroin, I used any and all drugs that were available. No one was forcing me at that point, but I enjoyed the numbness. The heroin kept me numb. The meth kept me awake so I wouldn’t have to deal with the flashbacks. And the other drugs…well, they were just to pass the time in between. I think I was trying to erase the past…erase the old Wendi…

Thank you, Wendi for your candid response. “Polysubstance abuser” is a new term for me.

Your troubles began when you lied to your parents about where you would be hanging out with your friend. That is when you met Joey and Zeke. Was following them your first major mistake, or was lying to your parents the catalyst?

Wow! That’s a great point. I’d always considered my first major mistake to be when I followed the boys. But you’re right. I never should have lied to my parents in the first place. But I knew if I told the truth, they’d prevent me from going. All kids lie from time to time, don’t they? If I could do it all again, I’d change…everything.

Yes, of course. All kids do lie to their parents from time to time, for similar reasons as you did. Unfortunately, you learned the hard way why parents set rules. The really hard way.

When the boys stuck you and your best friend Claire with the shoplifting charges, why did you forgive them?

I’d never received so much positive attention from a boy. Joey was sweet and charming, and I wanted him to like me so much that I was willing to overlook his flaws. He was my first real crush.

You felt uncomfortable at the boys’ Aunt’s house. What was it about the situation that led you to believe you might be in trouble? Was it the people? The house? Or a general feeling?

All of the above. The whole situation felt “off”. The limo driver was a total creep and kept staring at me strangely in the rearview. He was supposed to be picking someone up, but instead, we were sitting in some strange lady’s living room. She was using drugs and staring at me and Claire strangely. I felt a general sense of unease. I don’t know what it is about gut feelings…but they’re usually right, and I should have trusted my initial instincts. There was something secretive in the air, and I knew something was wrong. I tried to go back to meet my mom, but by that point it was too late.

I’m curious, what was it about Officer Jonathan Milby, that made you want to straighten out?

For a police officer, he was surprisingly young. Here was this guy, not much olderthan me, and he seemed to have it all together. Plus, something about that uniform just screamed, “I’ll protect you!” I needed that. I needed saving…

Not only that…unlike every other man in my life, he didn’t want to sleep with me or do drugs with me. He was the first man who took an interest in me who wasn’t ill-intentioned. He wanted to help me, not use or hurt me.

I am glad you were able to trust him, especially since he turned out to be such a blessing in your life.

Was revenge always on your mind?

I was thirteen years old and terrified. I wanted to kill them all, honestly, but I didn’t have the means to do it. Not then. I thought about home all the time. I missed my mom and dad, and my old life. But by returning home, I’d have been placing their lives in danger. And I didn’t know what do about my addiction so I just ran. Looking back, I’d change everything about that day too. But I’d still try to kill them – the ones who hurt me.

What are your feelings on your landlord, Ruth?

At first, I was so happy with Ruth, I could have kissed her. She gave me a place to stay so I didn’t have to be homeless. She seemed understanding and kind. She’d also been through some shit in her life, just like me. In fact, she lost her son. But…as you know, her son turned out to be someone I was looking for. So, we were at odds with each other. It’s unclear how much she knew about…but she knew enough about what happened to me to make her guilty as sin, in my book.

I agree with you 100%! It’s hard to not have mixed feelings about Ruth.

What was your plan when you jumped out of Officer Milby’s car, and ran toward the ‘house of horrors’?

I didn’t have one, as usual. But there was no way in hell I was leaving there without catching a glimpse of their faces. I had to know if it was them. I had to be sure. If Jonathan wasn’t there to stop me, who knows? I might have gone after them right then. I wasn’t thinking logically. All I knew is that I’d been waiting nearly eight years to find the place, and there I was…standing right in front of the House of Horrors of my youth. I’d been searching for it for so long, it almost seemed like it wasn’t real anymore. But there it stood – real as could be. I had to see it for myself.

Will you ever be able to allow your daughter, Shelby, to go off with friends, out of your eyesight? Is this a fear of yours because of what happened to you?

I never want my darkness to seep through and saturate her life, so I try to let her be a carefree, silly teenager. But I used to be that way too…I will never stop watching over her, protecting her…I have to make sure she’s safe. And as long as we live in Flocksdale, I don’t know if that’s possible.

Is there anything I haven’t asked that you would like readers to know about you?

I used to be just like you. But then I was taken, from my family and friends. In an instant, my life changed forever…

Whatever you do, stay the hell out of Flocksdale. That place is straight out of a horror movie.

Thank you, Wendi!

Have You Seen This Girl (Flocksdale Files Book 1) by [Lynch, Carissa Ann]Wendi Wise is a troubled young woman who snorts her breakfast through a straw and spends more time in rehab than in the real world…
Her life is seemingly out of control.
But now she has a plan.
That plan involves a sharp set of butcher knives.
She’s going back to where all of her troubles began…
Flocksdale.
Wendi was lured away from a local skating rink, at the age of thirteen, and held captive in a place she calls ‘The House of Horrors.’ Dumped off blindfolded on the side of a dirt road, Wendi soon discovered that she was addicted to the drugs they fed her while she was captive.
Too scared to go home, and having a new habit to deal with, she hopped on a bus, vanishing from the family she loved.
Vanishing from Flocksdale…
The town of Flocksdale is littered with fliers with a grainy image of young Wendi, and the words ‘Have You Seen This Girl?’ written below.
Now, eight years later, she’s on a mission—a mission to find the mysterious house from her youth and the monsters who dwell inside it.
“This is the end, beautiful friend, the end…”

“Dear Cliff, If you are reading this letter, it can only be because I have passed away.”

Cliff’s Grandmother has been killed… his family has been threatened… he’s being hunted, blackmailed, and amidst it all, he falls in love.

Without A Conscious, by Author James William Peercy, moves like a tornado. The story takes place in only a few short days, and in those few days college student Cliff is dragged into a mystery threatening America, that began in 1950, all while mourning the passing of his beloved Grandmother–a woman who was privy to these deadly secrets and was killed for her knowledge.

The action begins right away, when he discovers the letter his Grandmother left him. This letter prompts a wild goose chase–a dangerous mission that leads to multiple shocking discoveries.

The writing is smooth and the characters complex. Cliff’s eagerness to protect those around him is endearing, and what I liked about him the most. I don’t often read novels with a male protagonist, but this was a refreshing change.

Without A Conscious is a wild ride, sure to delight fans of mystery and suspense! 5/5 Stars.

About The Author

James William Peercy

“You’ll never make money being a writer.” Those words were told to me in middle school. “Pick another career.”

Not knowing any better, I did. I chose a major in computer science with a minor in math. After graduation, I went on to start my own computer company.

In 2011, I turned to my wife and told her, “I’ve done the computer thing and have been writing all these years. I could not stop. I am ready to be published.”

I was about to go the self-publishing method when I was invited to a pitch the publisher event in Indiana. The publishers attending not only liked the books I presented, but they picked them up. I have been writing and publishing books ever since.

Some of the stories you will see were written years ago. A great story stands the test of time. Others have been freshly minted from my own mind.

So what was the book which first caught that middle school student’s attention? ‘The Red Planet’ by Robert A. Heinlein. From that point on, I could not get enough. As the ideas filled my head, I had to find a way to let them out.

Whether it is Science Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery, or Poetry, you’ll see all kinds from me.

I hope you enjoy!

AWRW Book Review

I would like to thank Bonnier Zaffre for the complimentary paperback copy of My Husband’s Son.

With an intriguing tagline like, “You’d always recognize your own child. Wouldn’t you?”, this book didn’t sit on my shelf for long! Also the cover is great; I love the red color pop against the blue. I couldn’t wait to crack into this, and it was better than I expected!

Heidi and Jason were brought together by tragedy. Their marriage is based on a deep connection/understanding of what it’s like to lose a child. While Heidi’s daughter will never come back, Jason’s son is missing and they share the hope that he will return one day. Then, Heidi see’s a child who she insists is Jason’s missing son.

Except, Jason doesn’t recognize the boy as his son, and he quickly dismisses Heidi. But she doesn’t give up, even if that means risking her marriage to discover the truth.

My Husband’s Son, by debut author Deborah O’ Connor, moves like a tornado. It’s a fast read that leaves your heart pounding and your head spinning. I reread the epilogue several times because Heidi’s choice was so shocking to me, and I had to be sure I was reading it right! This story will be on my mind for awhile.

The plot of this story was unique in how the couple came together. Both Heidi and Jason were complex characters with tragic backstories. I liked the telling of the story through Heidi, in first person perspective.

An excellent psychological suspense well deserving of five stars.
